LO 2 – Use of energy efficient farming

Summary

Farming and food sector is responsible for about 1/3rd of the global energy consumption. Due to this reason, improving energy efficiency in farming is of crucial importance for reduction of energy demands and costs. In addition, the enhanced energy efficiency decreases the dependence on fossil fuels and thus, contributes to the reduction of GHG emissions.
All farming operations and processes that need energy can be subjected to reduction of energy demands applying relevant technology changes, improved operations, and green management. In general context, these operations are related to both farming production and its processing.
The main targets for substantial energy savings are focused on fueling agricultural production, powering equipment, fertilizing soil, irrigating land, sustaining livestock, processing food, and transporting the final products to market.
To efficiently reduce energy costs, energy best practices for farming have to be deployed that will reflect in increased profits and productivity.
